Bakelite is a powdered phenolic resin, which is mixed with sawdust, asbestos or clay, and then pressed out with a mold at high temperature. Phenolic resin is a resin made by polycondensation of phenol and formaldehyde under catalyst conditions, neutralization, and washing with water. Due to the choice of catalysts, it can be divided into two types, thermosetting and thermoplastic. Phenolic resins have good acid resistance, mechanical properties and heat resistance, and are widely used in anti-corrosion engineering, adhesives, flame retardant materials, grinding wheel manufacturing and other industries.
Several types of thermosetting phenolic resins are commonly used in the field of anti-corrosion: phenolic resin coatings; phenolic resin FRP, phenolic-epoxy composite fiberglass; phenolic resin cement, mortar; phenolic resin impregnated, compacted graphite products. The curing forms of thermosetting phenolic resins are divided into two types: room temperature curing and heat curing. Normal temperature curing can use non-toxic normal temperature curing agent NL, benzenesulfonyl chloride or petroleum sulfonic acid, but the latter two materials are more toxic and irritating. It is recommended to use a low toxicity and efficient NL curing agent. The filler can be selected from graphite powder, porcelain powder, quartz powder, and barium sulfate powder, and diabase powder should not be used.
