Ischemic stroke
This form of stroke occurs when the arteries supplying blood to the brain become blocked or narrowed. Ischemia, or a dramatic reduction in blood flow, occurs, as a result, damaging brain cells.
Ischemic stroke is frequently caused by blood clots. Clots can occur in the arteries of the brain as well as other blood vessels throughout the body. These are carried by the bloodstream into the brain's narrower arteries.
Ischemia can also be caused by fatty plaque deposits in the arteries, which can lead to clots.
